about

Recorder Song for V

When my eldest, now 7, was 2.5, she came home from daycare singing this melody. Intrigued, I transcribed it. Now, 4.5 years later, I have turned it into a recorder composition.

This song, for two soprano recorders, introduces students to the 20th Century musical idea of phasing. The song is made up of a 4 bar melody, which is repeated 16 times. Both parts have a range of F#3 to D4. As of the second repetition, soprano recorder 2 loses a beat, whereas soprano recorder 1 carries on with the melody as per my daughter's initial intent.

A challenge piece for two or for a whole class, this relatively simple recorder composition is sure to be a 21st Century hit with your students and audiences alike!
